Crossings Cafe @ Waterloo Street

Crossings Cafe, did they come out with the name because we have to cross a road before reaching the cafe?  ... haha...

Cold joke aside, from the newspaper article,  the reason of the unique cafe name is because "...this cafe is a cross between a business and the social organization..." sounds cool to me...

Crossings Cafe is situated along waterloo street just a short walk from bras bersah stations. Its next to Sts. Peter & Paul Church.

The color of the exterior of the cafe makes it look atas and with just a signboard with an article saying what is this cafe all about. Like what people usually says, 'simplicity is a virtue'.

when I entered into the cafe, it just brightens up giving it a lively tone with the contrast of colors and the texture of the walls bringing up the spaciousness of the cafe...As a great deal of white colored was used, it brightens up the place contrasting it with the black board at the counter, the cream-colored tables and golden yellow paper mat laid on the their tables. All in all, it gave it the modern touch..

The tables were setup like those 'fine dining' western cafes...
We started off with drinks and Sides & Bites...
Iced Cafe Latte
Sweet Potato Fries

The sweetness of the potato fries makes it savory...
it is not that crunchy as compared to the truffle fries... but it is still pretty good.

Truffle Fries

- The thickness of the fries is good, it was served piping hot and the crunchiness wouldn't let you stop, it is so addictive...

however the down side is the fries do not have enough truffle oil coated :( -

If too much truffle oil smell is not your typed, you should order this fries to have something different from the norm.

Baked Black Pepper Chicken Rice
Buttered pilaf rice with sweet capsicum, zucchini, onions and mushrooms alternate with layers of ricotta, Mozzarella, Cheddar and Parmesan between lasagna sheets.

When the baked rice was served the aroma of the dish just filled the air, makes my tummy rumbles... having the first spoonful in my mouth, the spiciness kicks in with the cheesiness makes it so smooth and it just goes so well with each other... the blending taste of the black pepper with the soft bites of rice and the lasagna... makes it a pleasure to eat it.

I do not really like overdoes of cheese on my dish, especially on baked rice.
Usually the bake rice are covered with a whole chunk of melted mozzarella cheese with cheddar cheese, which makes you feel sick of it...

You should give this a try!

Just to share: Some of you may ask what is Rice pilaf.
It actually refers to rice that is cooked by the "pilaf method," in which the uncooked rice is first sautéed in butter, after which hot liquid or stock is added, and then the pot is covered and cooked in the oven until all the liquid is absorbed.

Honey Mustard Ribs
A set of pork loin ribs roasted with honey mustard sauce, served with sweet potato fries and a salad to makes a full set for one.

- This dish is not my cup of tea, because the pork have this milky pork smell, I preferred those without the smell. So if you are like me, you may wanna give this a miss. -

Chicken & Aubergine Parmigiana
Baked layers of breaded boneless chicken breast, topped with grilled aubergine (egg plant), tomato concasse and mozzarella cheese. Served with normal fries and salad.

This dish was done with a classic northern Italian recipe to serve aubergine.
If you are a person that doesn't really like egg plants, do give this a try, as it is just two slices of the egg plants layered with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese and its baked with the breaded boneless chicken...

Am glad that I gave it a try, not regretting what went into my tummy =))

Profiterole
Cream puffs drizzled with chocolate sauce and roasted almond flakes. Served with vanilla ice cream.

An enticing dessert - it serves 3 in a single order ;)
Iced Mango Souffle
A frozen treat of eggs, cream and pureed mango. Served with wild berries, mango and strawberry sauces.

The soft and smooth texture of the souffle just slip through my throat, with the coldness it just melts the hot weather away. I like it without the sauce, as I find the sauces are too sweet.

Panna Cotta of the Day

An Italian dessert that made by simmering together cream, milk, and sugar, mixing this with gelatin, and letting it cool until set. - For this it is made with coconut milk and topped with chocolate sauce and chips.

Their service crews, are alert, steady, always calm and pleasant to their customers, they helped us with our orders, explaining some terms of the terms to us, like ... "
Aubergine".

Thanks guys!

I would like to help them do a shout-out here:

Crossings Cafe is not just any western cafe, their profit actually goes to the charity organizations and their main focus are to help those youth at risk and disadvantaged.

So if you dine in their cafe you are directly contributing to the community!

So for such a great deal, come and dine in and taste their much fusion-Italian cuisine as a whole.

I would recommend this place for a good chilling venue, to catch up with your old friends.

Porridge Paradise @ Bugis

This family business, situated at Tan Quee Lane, was newly opened. It's a quick short walk from Bugis Junction to Porridge Paradise.

A clean, simple and tidy restaurant, with their posters greeted me when my friend and I came to the shop front...

It is a quiet, homely setup which makes us feel at home...

Do they sell only Porridge, the answer is 'NO',
they are like some 'zhi zhar' air-conditioned restaurant.

~ Signature Dish ~
3C Porridge
The 3C porridge was served, it came out to be a good size for 2-3 pax to share. Presentation of the porridge are simple but does not give you a feel that it is just the normal porridge and with the garnishes it just perks up my appetite. mmmhmm!

Without seeing what are the description in the menu of the three porridge, I took each mouthful and all three type of porridge gave me a different taste and feel. Which turns out surprisingly good. I like the yellow colored porridge best. The taste is unique, you will definitely not cooked it at home. The green & red porridge are quite the norms... but the chef is quite generous with the ingredients =))

And after reading the menu, the following is what the 3C Porridge:
Red Porridge: Shredded Chicken Porridge, 'lowers cholesterol'
Yellow Porridge: Prawn Porridge, 'An antioxidant'
Green Porridge: Minced Pork Porridge, 'boosts immune'

Curry Chicken
The spiciness of this bowl of good is just nice. However, it is not to my liking, as I prefer spicier food.
The owner know that Singaporean loves to have bread to go along with our curry, so she provided me with a loaf of bread... that just made my evening, woots! (By the way, they are locals too :])

Pork Belly w Preserved Vegetables
Putting the fattiness pork belly into my mouth it just melts and with the preserved vegetables it just trickle the sweetness and saltiness of the dish which made it flavorsome!

Assorted Vegetables
I LOVE to eat greens! This is one of my favourite dish, and it isn't too oily.
With the aromatic smell of the oyster sauce with the fried scallots, my green are done properly...

The Chef and service guys are awesome, as they seek to your need and will recommend you the best food. Trust me, what we did that day, was we just leave it to the chef and said, whipped whatever is appropriate for us, 'as we do not want to crack any more of our brain juice'.

So what you see here is what the chef had specially prepared for us that day.

I would recommend you guys to visit this place for family lunch/dinner, group gatherings or  a simple dinner with your love ones.

As for the pricing, it is reasonable, about S$10-20.
Hope you enjoy as much as I did :)

Wheeler's Yard @ Lorong Ampas

Growing up near Balestier area and I can't believe I have overlooked this place >.<
Among the industrial and newly built condos -Wheeler's Yard.

Hardly you can find a place, large and vintage look in Singapore, for a moment there I really thought I left Singapore. Always had the impression that this kind of building only exists in the European countries...
2nd part of the seating area...

Self - collection:
You will be buzzed once the food is prepared

interested in getting a 'vintage" bike, once I was there, the feel just brought me back to the 80s whereby the most common mode of travelling is by bicycle...

As the name of the place perceive, their furnitures are what can be often found in your yard...
A different concept... which give me the feel like I am sitting at my backyard enjoying my dinner under the clear blue sky...

Now for the food....

Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs
~ the look of the dish makes my tummy growl~ before I head down read about the reviews on some other blogs and I wanted to try it... so putting a mouthful of the scrambled eggs into my mouth makes my eye twinkle .... as the eggs are not dry like most breakfast set served elsewhere... some time it's quite challenging to get the scrambled eggs to be cooked just nicely. Not those overly done and definitely not underdone.  Here, the eggs are done appropriately... accompanying it with the smoked salmon~ not too saltish and the garden salad... 'perfecto'
Cheese Fries
Big Breakfast
Gave me a pretty home prepared breakfast set, look pretty normal.
Hum Bao Bao!
the name of the dish caught my attention, so 'Old School', now we call it Hamburger,
to my granny generation we just need to say HUM BAO BAO!

It is served with double beef patties, bacon, toasted buns, lettuce, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and caramelized onions. This dish is flavorful, you can taste the sweetness from the caramelized onions, saltishness from the bacon and mozzarella cheese.
Beef Yard Burger
It is simply served,  the only different this burger and the hum bao bao is that;
Beef Yard Burger - consist of a single patty of beef...

Tonkotsu Ramen @ Mitsubachi Ramen

Mitsubachi Ramen!

Mitsubachi Ramen located at Orchard Plaza near Cuppage Terrrace.

As a Singaporean, I like my food with a very distinct taste, to be precised strong and unforgettable taste, don't you all too?

With the recommendation of my friend, both of us walked up to a well-lighted Japanese like stall, with indoor and outdoor sittings.

It's a little crampy where along the walls and a front of the kitchens are laid with counter top tables. There's a table situated at the back of the shop which is able to sit about 4- 5 pax comfortably.

When it's our turn, we get to sit a front of the board...  which write about Mitsubachi and what are the soup made up of...
"...uses Pork Bone, Water & Passion"
Tonkotsu Ramen
We ordered Tonkotsu Ramen, that's their signature dish by the way, when my share was dished out, it actually look similar to those Ramen served in Ajisen and Ramen Play. (I was thinking to myself, what so special about this bowl of ramen? Especially after reading the board.. hmmm)

My habit, I usually try out the soup first, to me the soup base of the dish is the foundation that determines the bowl of food that I am consuming, just kicks in when we are ready to tuck in. Putting a spoonful of the soup into my mouth, I was just taken aback. With such a simple presentation, the stock was pretty thick, the pungent of the soup really tells that the soup was cooked via the authentic taste from the raw ingredients... ;)), which makes me continue taking the second and third ...and the best news, there ain't any MSG added in the soup! OISHII!!!!!

Putting the Ajitsuke Tamago, (also known as Hanjuku Egg, Nitamago) into my mouth, felt a little cold at first and the egg with some soya sauce marination cooked via soft boiled method. (A great yet challenging manner of having the egg cooked, I shall try making it one day) Leaving a bouncy yet refreshing taste in my mouth...

We ordered a plate of goyza which consists of 6 pcs... my friend intro me a new way of eating my gyoza..first to take the gyoza and dip into the ramen soup and add some vinegar (optional) and then into your mouth. (maybe you guys had tried it? Its just me being mountain tortise. .. haha) it actually quite tasty eating in that manner....

The pricing is reasonable,  ranges from 10+ to 18.50+ per pax. I recommend that if you all like to order drink either order plain water (refilling of water - self service) or the beer there, as the carbonated drink are quite overrated.
Even though the shop is crampy, and only have about 4 workers inclusive of 1 server, he is quick and alert, quite impressed with his service, as there aren't any wrong orders taken or dished out.

If you like the pork without the milky smell you should really come and give it a try, like what my friend told me, he tried when he had a blocked nose and he still can taste the soup... you can imagine that :)

Hungry Chimps @ Prinsep Street

Hungry Chimps located on the 2nd floor, just above Playnation (by the way, it is part of Playnation) A closely-knitted stairway leads you to the entrance of Hungry Chimps. A dining venue with well lit lights, when you entered, it just feel home. They have a private corner where you and your besties can enjoy during dinner with the window view.

My friends and I went there for dinner and look what variety of food we had feast on:
"King Kong Breakfast" consists of a 3 layered pancakes, a quarter ponder beef patty and wild mushrooms

"Seafood Aglio Olio", it is a little spicy where the dish are topped with spicy flakes.

"The Orient" - a set of Honey glazed grilled chicken chop set with sides
"Truffle Shepherd" made up of grilled spice chicken, seafood, mushrooms and corn kernels baked with cheese. However, there is a preparation time of 20 minutes, so be prepared to wait. The name itself is already unique and if you tried it, it seems like you are eating truffle fries, which melts in your mouth.

For the same price of the Truffle Shepherd, you may also get "Yuzu Honey Chicken with Sour Cream" - Japanese Yuzu marinated chicken. The Yuzu just gives a refreshing touch to it...

Averagely it costs S$10 - S$25 per pax. You may want to give it a try, these are some of the Chef Recommendations!

Supply & Demand @ Esplanade

Visited Supply and Demand yesterday for dinner and was quite surprised to see such a wonderful dine-in located in esplanade...

Modern Italian Peruvian Bistro & Rooftop Bar
(Located next to Makasutra)

A vintage studio setup was what greeted us at their front door. When we entered the Bistro Bar, the light settings were a little dim but lively. To maximize the little bistro, the tables were set closely together. The choice of music were great, acoustic genre was chosen and it wasn't played too loudly. Which build up on the snugly warm and comfortable ambience.

With their best effort, Supply & Demand caters to the different groups of diners, as you may find various setups like;

Rooftop seating, where a great view of the surroundings can be observed. If you have a minimum of 8 pax do give them a ring to book the Gazebo tent located at the corner of the rooftop. They have the air-conditioned area and the outdoors seating too!

Their Appetizers are served in mess tin! It just bring back the good old days of camping.

Salchipapa
Calamari

When my order came, "Fish of the Day" I was quite surprise that they used the method: al cartoccio* for preparing the fish.

Opening up the parchment bag, the savory aroma just fills the air. The fish was done just right!

On top of choosing the mains, to solve some of our problems of making choices, Supply & Demand offers to aid in selecting the sides for you. How do you go about ordering, you just need to pick your meat staples and the sides (which consists of a salad and a starch based item) will be chosen by the Chef.

If you can't finish the usual portion, you may opt for the choice "Tasting" (which is half of the normal portion; according to the server, it is about half a palm size) "Full" consists of the normal portion size.

For the set I ordered, it cost me S$23. With the mouthwatering and tenderness of the fish (By the way, I am very particular about fish) I feel it worth the price.

- I dislike my fish to be overdone, having the fishy smell is a 'BIG NO-NO', the sweetness of the fish must be tasted even though it's marinated with other spices. -

As the Menu it ranges from about S$10 to S$40, it is great for group nights-out too.

There weren't any problem with getting the attention of the servers at all. They are all dressed up  pretty neatly. Like always, we aren't a group of quick decision makers, with the patience of the servers and recommending us the best deal of the day. We wouldn't mind visiting Supply & Demand once more.

* al cartoccio in Italian, is a method of cooking in which the food is put into a folded pouch or parcel and then baked.
